Well-Rounded Education Programs
Overview
The Well-Rounded Education Programs Office administers discretionary grant programs that support activities designed to advance literacy skills, provide professional learning opportunities to teachers to increase the performance of students in mathematics and science, create leadership pipelines for schools in need of improvement, support arts education, and pay all or a portion of advanced placement fees on behalf of low-income students.
Selected Responsibilities
The office administers programs that are designed to:
- advance literacy skills for students from birth through grade 12, including limited-English-proficient students and students with disabilities;
- build and enhance the ability of elementary schools and secondary schools nationwide to identify gifted and talented students and meet their special educational needs;
- increase the academic achievement of students in mathematics and science by enhancing the content knowledge and teaching skills of classroom teachers;
- develop and implement or enhance and implement a leadership pipeline that selects, prepares, places, supports, and retains school leaders for School Improvement Grant (SIG) schools (and/or SIG-eligible schools) in a local educational agency (LEA) or consortium of LEAs.
- support national-level arts education projects and services for children and youth, the implementation of model professional development programs for arts educators and other instructional staff, and the development and dissemination of accessible instructional materials and arts-based educational programming; and
- award grants to eligible State educational agencies (SEAs) to pay all or a portion of advanced placement test fees on behalf of eligible low-income students.
